In honor of the Lunar New Year, also known as Seollal in Korea, Kpop idols were posting festive images on their social media accounts 📷. Jang Wonyoung also wished her fans a lucky 2023 with an Instagram post where she was wearing a hanbok and referred to the holiday as either Seollal or the Lunar New Year.
But Chinese supporters were not happy 🙅♀️ with Wonyoung's choice of words and demanded that she refer to it as the "Chinese New Year". This led to Wonyoung receiving hateful comments from netizens who were presumed to be Chinese. They cursed her, wished her death, and left tons of vomiting emojis 🤮. Some even went as far as to denigrate the hanbok as "Korean-Chinese clothing".

The British Museum also received backlash for publishing an article about Seollal and had to delete it soon after. But Korean fans came to Wonyoung's defense, leaving positive comments and saying that Chinese netizens can't force others to use their terminology.
